There’s a death-grip on my hips. My hands are on fire as I hold onto Josh’s shoulders. Something is burning my palms but I can’t move. He whispers something and then quickly rises from the bench, setting me on my feet. I rub my hands together. The burn lingers and my skin flushes bright red.
“Go out the window and climb to the highest—“ but he’s cut off by the sound of his father’s voice booming through the house, seeking him out. “Fuck get out! Get out the window. Now!”
Before I can even react, Josh pushes me hard, and I fall onto the roof. He shuts the window and locks me out. I scramble to the top of the house feeling my heart pounding in fear inside of my chest. I have to blink to adjust my eyes to the dead of night. The whole block is peaceful, but I hear shouting from inside of the house…and then…nothing.
I feel like I shouldn’t even breathe.
Like my heart should stop working.
Suddenly, the front door slams. I crawl a little further out to see what’s going on below. I expect to see Josh or his father Nico but it’s my mother. She climbs into Nico’s Expedition and screeches out of the driveway. She left me. She just…left me behind.
“Faith.” His voice pulls me away from self-pity. Josh quickly climbs to where I am and smooths his hand over my hair, panting as if he’s run miles—the boy who can lift me over his head like a feather—the boy who can do push-ups with one hand while a girl sits on his back. “I won’t mean any of what I say. Please just—“
Nico cuts him off, hollering, “It’s time to go. Take the girl.”
I whip my head to Joshua, but the light has gone out in his eyes. He’s not a summer time boy with a kiss for me on his lips. He’s not an illegal left-hand turn on red. He’s black as the night surrounding me.
“Get up,” Josh orders. “I won’t ask twice.”
